Best White Nursing Shoes
- By George P.H.
After reviewing 53 pairs of shoes, the Nurse Mates Velocity (women) and Saucony Omni Walker (men) are the best white nursing shoes.
We collaborated with Desiree McCracken: a registered nurse with 29 years’ experience. Her mentoring, tutoring and work experience helped us a lot. In the Buyer’s Guide section, she explains why uniform soles, spill-proof uppers and other features are important.
We then heard from nurses in different fields using social media. We tested the shoes they recommended and made notes. So, lo and behold, here are the best picks for nurses and nursing students.
We chose the Nurse Mates Align Velocity for its foot support, cushioning and overall comfort. It looks like a stylish leather shoe but performs like an athletic shoe. It’s also lightweight and non-slip thanks to a unique sole design.
For men, the Saucony Omni Walker 3 is our top pick. It has all the features we want: great arch support, a non-slip sole, and of course, comfort. We liked that the midsole is supportive and ergonomic, keeping the feet energized.
Since every nurse is different, we also picked out favorites across other categories. Our favorite tennis shoe models are the Gel Challengers from ASICS (men | women). Our favorite nursing clogs are the Vangelo Nurse Clogs (men) and the Nurse Mate Dove Clogs (women).

Nurse Mates Velocity
Why this product?
Arch support and foot comfort thanks to Align orthotic insole. Bouncy, light and flexible EVA midsole. Water and oil-resistant. A minimalist shoe with bouncy and squishy sole around the heel. Stretch laces to slip on and off easily. Designed for nurses.
100/100
Our Score
This shoe combines the best features of a walking shoe and a leather clog. The Align orthotic insole provides arch support and foot comfort. It’s made for full body alignment and support through long shifts. It’s designed specifically for nurses. The nurses we spoke to rate it highly.
The EVA midsole is bouncy, light and flexible. Instead of a full outsole, the Velocity has outsole overlays on the parts that come in contact with the floor. This makes the shoe water and oil-resistant. There’s a stabilizing composite shank inside the midsole for durability, arch support and balance.
The shoe has a slight heel drop. To make up for this, the sole is bouncy and squishy around the heel. It flattens out when you stand or walk. This means that this shoe performs like a uniform-sole model. It feels more like a minimalist shoe and less like platform shoes or uncomfortable heels.
The Velocities come in women’s sizes six to eleven, wide and regular. They have stretch laces, making them incredibly easy to slip on and off. If the stretch laces don’t fit your feet well, you can change them out for traditional laces.
Nurse Mates suggests giving these shoes a break-in period of a few hours before jumping into a shift. They can be a little rough at first until the insole and leather upper break in. Despite the comfort and cushioning, they still have a professional, sleek look that’s hard to beat.
Pros
- Light EVA midsole for flexibility
- Water and oil-resistant
- Stretch laces to easily slip on and off
Cons
- Takes time to break in
Best Nursing Clogs (Men)
Vangelo Clog
Why this product?
A large ankle collar makes it easy to slip on and off. Ultimate cushioning thanks to EVA memory foam midsole. Removable Ortholite insole for foot support. Stay on, but not tight at the heel. Protects against hot water and dangerous spills. Slip-resistant. Made to ASTM industry standards.
97/100
Our Score
These clogs are comfortable. The Vangelo clogs are made to ASTM industry standards and recommended by the American Podiatric Medical Association. Our testers said this shows in their comfort and support quality.
They’re easy to slip on and off thanks to a large ankle collar. The EVA memory foam midsole gives enough cushioning to keep your feet comfortable throughout the day. It has some midsole support built into it. It also has a rocker outsole element and a non-slip outsole. This makes walking easy and stable; important for any nurse shoe.
On top of the midsole is an Ortholite insole. This can be removed if you need to clean the shoe or insert a new set of insoles. It supports the feet well, making them cushion and support your body better. It’s a few notches above what you get with similarly-priced mass market clogs. It’s enough to support moderately flat feet, mild over or under pronation, etc.
It can be hard to find a pair of clogs that stay on but aren’t uncomfortably tight at the heel. These hit the spot. The heel cup has an ergonomic shape and rises higher than in most other clogs. As long as you find the right size, the heel feels good and is secure. It also has some nice cushioning. Its height is offset by the elevated toe box.
The upper is made from thick, spill-proof rubber. Vangelo designed these clogs to protect chefs from hot water and other dangerous spills. They’re tough enough to handle any liquid you might encounter at your clinic or hospital. Outsole grooves allow water through and help you maintain grip.
Vangelo slip resistant clogs come in a wide range of sizes, from size four to sixteen in US Men’s. If you have difficulty finding your size, this could be the shoe for you. This is also good shoe if you need to slip in and out of your clogs often.
Pros
- Large ankle collar makes it easy to slip on and off
- Non-slip outsole
- Available from sizes four to sixteen
Cons
- Order 1 to half size up

99/100
Our Score
This clog performs like an athletic shoe but looks stylish and professional. Unlike most clogs and mules, it’s snug on your foot. The double sided goring adds extra flexibility and helps ensure a perfect fit once the shoe is on.
These upper on these white nurse shoes is durable pebble leather pebble leather. The pebble leather provides a unique texture that looks professional. It’s velvety and soft, but spill-resistant and easy to clean. The interior of the shoe uses the same smooth leather, making this clog soft and velvety on the foot.
For extra comfort and security, these Doves have extra cushioning on the upper. The same cushioning is found in the ankle collar. This means they won’t rub or chafe as you wear it through your nursing shift. It also ensures a snug fit, with the padding filling up gaps between foot and shoe.
For slip resistance, the Dove Oxfords have rubber soles that grip well on all surfaces. This includes wet surfaces (oil and water). The sole is ergonomic, with arch support and a rocker sole design that gives easy heel-to-toe transition. This is a comfortable shoe for walking long distances. Most clogs are made for doctors who mostly stand, but this is the exception.
These shoes don’t require much break in time, though some users have found that the ankle collar stretches a little bit after a few days of use. If you find them a little tight, give them a short break in period to see if the leather adjusts to your foot size. If the ankle collar becomes too loose, you can always take them to a shoe repair shop to get them tightened up.
Nurse Mates Dove Oxfords come in US women’s sizes five to twelve. They come in regular or wide, so you don’t have to cram your feet into too-narrow shoes. You can also get a wider option to make space for custom orthotic insoles.

- Slip-resistant rubber soles
- Available in regular and wide
Cons

95/100
Our Score
These shoes are inexpensive but not cheap, if you know what we mean. They feature ABZORB cushioning in the heel. This is good for walking long distances, softening heel strikes. The rest of the midsole is ergonomic, with solid arch support and flex grooves for flexibility. The midsole molds to your foot shape over time, although not quite as well as EVA foam. This makes for a comfortable walking shoe with good shock absorption.

To make the shoe more durable, New Balance reinforced the toe cap and heel of these walking shoes. Unfortunately, the rubber soles of the 577 V1 Walking Shoes are not water and oil resistant. This isn’t a slip resistant shoe. Fine for many nurses, but a problem for some.

ASICS Gel-Lyte III
Why this product?
A unique split tongue reduces the pressure on the top of the foot. Snug and comfortable. Nubuck upper with mesh elements for breathability. ASIC’S GEL Technology insole for extra shock absorption. Removable ergonomic insole. Available from sizes seven to fourteen.
97/100
Our Score
Testers say the Gel-Lyte 3s are the comfiest shoe on the list. They do feature gray midsoles and stitching, so they may not be appropriate everywhere. Still, these feel great on your feet even after hours of standing or walking. They’re based on an older ASICS running shoe, retaining all of its comfort tech and adding some new features.
First let’s get the bad news out of the way. The Gel-Lyte III shoes are only mostly slip-proof. The rubber sole isn’t slip-resistant. It does well on dry surfaces and can handle some water, but will not hold up on oil.
The Gel-Lyte III shoes have a unique split tongue that reduces the pressure on the top of your foot. While it might take some getting used to, it makes the shoe snug but comfortable. Our testers said they wish other shoes had tongues like this. The upper of this shoe is made from Nubuck with some mesh elements for additional ventilation. They also have quarter panel and heel webbing and a flexible sole.
The sole is comfy and unique too. It uses ASICS’ GEL Technology for extra shock absorption. We’re not sure how GEL works, but it’s incredibly soft. Reviewers and nurses report your feet will feel fresh and pain-free in these, even after long back-to-back shifts. The removable insole is ergonomic and can be replaced to extend the shoe’s lifespan.
The Asics Gel-Lyte III shoes come in men’s sizes seven to fourteen. The only drawback to these is that most models have elements of gray or cream rather than being solid bright white. If you need an all-white shoe, they may not be appropriate.
Pros
- Split tongue reduces pressure on top of foot
- Breathable
- Soft GEL Technology for shock absorption
Cons
- Not all-white

The internal lining is breathable and comfortable. There are mesh elements to allow for proper ventilation over long hours. The shoe never feels stuffy, hot or sweaty like some other nubuck models.

The split tongue design makes the shoe more flexible and adaptable to your foot. It significantly reduces pressure on the top of your foot and allows more freedom of movement.

You get the best of both worlds: a heavily padded heel section and a uniform sole. The shoe is stable, comfortable and designed for optimal foot posture. Sometimes you really can have it all!
The inner sock layer has some cushioning of its own. The Ortholite sockliner is breathable, with moisture management technology, and is removable. The midsole is a Solyte Midsole, which is lighter than the standard EVA foam – but no less comfortable. The AHAR Plus Outsole is 50 percent more durable than the standard high abrasion rubber.
Put all these features together and you have a comfy, supportive, lightweight shoe. Perfect for long shifts with lots of walking..
In order to give your feet a break, the Gel-Challenger 12 tennis shoes also have a rearfoot and forefoot GEL technology system. This absorbs shock and impact and encourages healthy movement through the gait cycle. It results in a natural roll with just the right amount of spring. The shoe really shines when you walk or run.
Because it’s important you don’t slip while on the job, ASICS has incorporated their Trusstic System Technology into this shoe. This TST system increases traction and is specifically designed to prevent injury. Like we mentioned, it doesn’t have 100% slip resistance – but it’s not far off.
The shoe upper combines leather and mesh for breathability, comfort and durability. The leather is durable and easy to clean; the mesh provides ventilation while you wear the shoe.
Overall, these are lightweight, comfortable shoes. If the silver accents aren’t an issue, these are a great go-to tennis shoe for nurses. They’ll keep your feet comfortable and cool during a long and active shift. They come in sizes six to fifteen, unfortunately with no wide option.

Where these tennis shoes really shine is comfort. Although they have the appearance of a large heel drop, in reality they wear flat. The cushioning on these shoes goes above any we’ve seen so far. The sole, like most ASICS soles, is best-in-class. The footbed is ergonomic, supportive and comfortable. We rate both highly.
The midsole is made of SOLYTE, a compound that is even lighter than the standard EVA midsoles. It’s incredibly comfortable and molds to your foot over time. The Trusstic System Technology maintains structural integrity while also providing a much lighter sole than other shoes we’ve seen. Not only does it make these easy to wear, but it also increases the comfort factor. The result is a shoe that’s light and unobtrusive on-foot.
This shoe uses the ASICS GEL Technology Cushioning System on the rear. This technology absorbs impact and makes for a smoother walking experience. It’s one of the better sole technologies we found in testing shoes for nurses. It absorbs shock and corrects your gait during the impact and toe-off phases. This makes walking feel effortless even after a long day at work.

Vionic recommends that you give this shoe a short break-in period before wearing it all day. We suggest you wear these shoes a few hours before wearing them on-shift. This will give them a chance to soften up and mold to your foot for maximum comfort and a better fit.
The shoes come in sizes five to eleven with several width options.
Pros
- PU foam base for added cushioning and support
- Lightweight and breathable upper
- High eyelets stabilize the ankle

Buyer's Guide: Best White Nursing Shoes
Desiree McCracken here. I’m a a registered nurse with 29 years’ experience working, teaching and mentoring. Here are the main features I recommend for white nurse shoes.
I’m specifically writing with a 12-hour shift in mind.
Whiteness
Most hospitals have gone to absolutely white. Other employers, like care homes or physicians, allow off-white or mostly white. So do some hospitals.
Your footwear doesn’t just need to be white out of the box, though. It needs to stay that way. You need a shoe that is easy to clean, either by wiping it off or tossing it in the wash.
Remember: we nurses can have all kinds of gross stuff land on our shoes. Trust me, I’ve done this for 29 years, I’ve seen it all. Look for non-stain, easy-to-clean shoes. That means smooth leather, vinyl, and other similar materials.
Non-slip, Quiet Soles
Speaking of getting things on your shoes… Nurses often walk over liquids spilled by patients, nurses and doctors. This can lead to falling, slipping and hurting yourself.
To prevent this, most hospitals have non-slip sole policies. Even if they don’t, hospital nurses need shoes that grip well – including on water and oil.
Some other nurse jobs don’t need water and oil-resistant soles. A nurse receptionist, a mental health nurse or a nurse educator may never be around liquids.
If this is your case, look for a grippy sole anyway. Most people don’t know this, but they’re much quieter and don’t squeak or creak!
Spill Resistance
Nurses need shoes that are closed and spill resistant. We want closed shoes with no cutouts.
This keeps liquids, including body fluids, away from your feet. It helps keep your shoes clean and white.
It also protects you from dropping a sharp object, e.g. needle or scalpel, on your foot. This is important for nurses in critical care, e.g. the ICU or the Emergency Department.
Mesh can be okay if it’s easy to wipe down and non-absorbent. If you deal with lots of liquids, the any mesh or leather needs to be completely waterproof.
Cushioning and Arch Support
We want a few things from our white nurse shoes. First, a midsole that’s cushioned but not too soft. Pay special attention to heel cushioning; the heel gets tired quickly when you’re walking and standing all day.
We also want support in the insole and midsole. This will keep your foot energized and your arch – elevated. I recommend shoes with insoles you can remove and replace.
A Comfortable Upper
Your feet will swell up by the end of your shift. Your needs to have a stretchy upper, stretch panels or a relaxed fit. It should also have a wide toe box.
Other comfort features, like a padded collar or tongue, are good too. Do your best to try a shoe on before buying it to make sure it’s comfortable enough for a long shift.
A Uniform Sole
Modern running shoes and doctor clogs and standinghave a drop (elevated) heel. This is wonderful for running; not so wonderful for trotting around a hospital for twelve hours.
Look for a shoe with a uniform sole, like a walking shoe. Even a slight change in height of the heel can make the shoe uncomfortable.
This is the reason our testers didn’t like Dansko clogs for this article. These high-end clogs almost universally have high drop heels.
Breathability and Odor Control
Feet stink, no matter what, and being in a shoe with no ventilation for twelve hours can make anybody’s feet stink.
The question is, how do you find a shoe that’s breathable and spillproof?
Some shoes have waterproof, breathable mesh. Others have wide ankle collars that let air in. A few models have moisture-wicking, ventilated insoles and padding.
If you have a removable insole, you can insert a ventilated, odor control one. This will give any shoe some measure of breathability and odor control.
Conclusion
