Best Tennis Shoes for High Arches
- By Team Shoethority
We tested 16 products; the Adidas Solematch Bounce Sneakers were the best tennis shoes for high arches (men | women).
We started by speaking to our team osteopath and sports doctor: Dr. Katherine Enes. We used social media to read from dozens of tennis players with high arches. We went out and tested the models that came up repeatedly in-store.
We picked the Solematch because it has the support a high arched foot needs. Its wide base and outrigger stop excessive supination and improve weight distribution. The outsole is durable with good shock absorption, which prevents repetitive impact injury on the outside of the foot.
Other shoes excel in specific areas. If you want a tennis shoe for walking, get the ASICS Gel-Dedicate 6 (men | women). The shoes will correct a high instep, reduce supination and make walking easier on the feet. If you want tennis-specific shoes, get the Wilson Rush Pro 3 (women) or the 2.5 (men).

What to Look for In the Best Tennis Shoes for High Arches
1. A Wide Base and/or an Outrigger
Having high arches means that you naturally put more weight on the outside of your foot.
This makes you more likely to supinate. It also means there’s extra impact on the outside of your foot, wearing shoes out faster in that area.
A wide base or an outrigger element will compensate for this.
It’ll stop the foot from rolling outward as much. This will reduce the chances of injury and make your shoe last longer.
2. Quality Midsole Cushioning
When you have high arches, you put more weight on the outside of the foot.
This can lead to repetitive impact injuries like peroneal tendonitis and plantar fasciitis.
To prevent this, we want to have a little extra midsole cushioning in tennis shoes for high arches.
Look for shoes that cushion the whole foot, especially this forefoot. Avoid shoes that only have heel cushioning.
3. A Flexible Shoe Build
Having a high arch means there is extra weight on the outside of your foot.
The more rigid the shoe, the more pronounced the effect.
A shoe with a flexible upper and outsole, on the other hand, will minimize this effect.
4. Supination Correction and High Arch Support
Most arch support shoes, including motion control shoe models, are made for excessive pronation. They increase arch height and make the foot supinate; the opposite of what we want.
That’s why we need shoes that correct the arch rather than push it upwards. This will improve foot posture, stop excessive supination and improve sports performance. It’ll also reduce the likelihood of knee pain and ankle instability.
5. Padded Tongue and Sidewalls
A padded tongue make it harder for an arch to get too high. Padded sidewalls stop feet from supinating excessively. We ideally want both.
Minimalist, thinly padded shoes aren’t good for high arches. They make it easy for the foot to scrunch up, go high and roll outwards.
6. Removable Insoles (Optional)
Like I said in point 4, most arch support shoes come are made for a low arch. They elevate the arch and increase supination: the opposite of what we want.
That’s why it can be helpful to get shoes with a removable insole. If we can remove a shoe’s insole, we can replace it with a high arch support one.
Motion control shoe models with pronation support built into the sole are an exception to this rule. They always elevate the arch and cause supination, even with an high arch orthotic insole. Avoid those.
How do shoes for clay, grass and hard courts differ?
When choosing a tennis shoe, consider what type of court you are going to be playing on.
Clay
If you’re playing on a clay court, look for a shoe with a full zigzag or herringbone pattern on the outsole. This tread pattern gives good grip and controlled traction on clay.
This will improve your confidence and control during turns and changes of speed. The herringbone design helps prevent clay getting lodged in the outsole.
It is non marking on the court. The sides of the shoe should be hardwearing, to prevent wear and tear during slides.
You should also look for a tightly knit upper shoe. This works to keep your foot secure, and to prevent clay from the court surface getting inside the shoe.
Clay courts are often brightly coloured. The clay can stain your shoes, so you might want to avoid wearing white shoes on a clay court.
Grass
Traditional grass courts can often be slippery, due to moisture and wear and tear.
With this in mind, look for an outsole covered with a pattern of bumps or pimples. This design provides the best grip and traction on a grass surface.
The outsole should be rounder and flatter, to avoid damaging the court. Grass courts are softer and less hardwearing on the shoes and the joints.
Therefore a durable outsole is not as important as when playing on a hard court.
Hard Surface
Most tennis courts have a hard surface.
This type of court is very demanding, both on your tennis shoes and on your joints. So, look for a shoe that has a hardwearing, tough outsole with a modified herringbone tread.
This pattern helps to give stability and traction on hard courts. The shoe should have a cushioned midsole, to give extra comfort and shock absorption.
This will work to protect your joints. A reinforced toe box will help protect against toe drag, limiting damage to your shoes and your feet.
Look for a durable and supportive upper, to give you extra stability on the hard surface.
