Best Shoes for Cashiers
- By Tim Ashdown
We researched 25+ pairs of footwear; the best shoes for cashiers are the Skechers Ghenter Bronaugh (women) and the Skechers Flex Advantage Bendon (men).
We started by talking to cashiers and retail workers. We used social media – Reddit, Quora, Facebook – and e-mail. We also spoke to the people working in stores we use to test footwear. We heard from over 40 people in total. They recommended their favorite pairs of shoes and told us what to look for. They also told us what to avoid. We wrote a buyer’s guide (found later in the article) based on their feedback.
Features that came up repeatedly include uniform soles, breathability and moderate (but not excessive) cushioning. Slip resistance is another big one. Something we were told to avoid is an excessive heel drop. While this may be good for sports and running, it’s uncomfortable for standing all day. Doctors on our team confirmed it can shorten the achilles, lead to bad posture and cause joint pain.
The women’s Skechers Ghenter Bronaugh is comfy for standing, walking and sitting all day. It also looks smart if you alternate between sales associate work and cashiering. It has decent arch support, a slip-resistant sole and a well-cushioned sole. The flexible upper and the midsole both bend easily, letting your feet move naturally. Retail sales workers recommended this shoe often, and our testers like it too. It’s available in black and white, which means it’ll conform to most dress codes
The Skechers Bendon Flex has many of the same features. It’s breathable and light. It has an athletic sole but looks smart. Although it’s a synthetic sole, it feels bouncy and cushions well. The memory foam insoles provide cushioning and moderate support. The shoes are slip-resistant. Testers and consumers both like the relaxed fit and wide toe box on the shoe. Many work shoes are constricting. The Bendon Work Shoe is roomy and comfortable for all-day wear.
The Skechers models aren’t for everyone. They have a mesh upper and may not be appropriate for some stores. If you want a formal shoe, check out the Dr Scholls Dynamo (women) and Dr Scholls Harrington (men) reviews below. Both shoes are comfy to stand, walk and sit in – but formal.
If you want supreme comfort, check out the Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 (men) and the Skechers Go Walk 5 (women). These shoes are unbeatable for walking and standing on a hard surface. They combine athletic features with smart casual looks. If they conform to your dress code, consider them.

Skechers Men's Flex Advantage Bendon Work Shoe
Why this product?
This shoe features a FlexSole that cushions and provides impact protection. The slip-resistant outsole contains flex grooves that allow your foot to bend and move naturally.
99/100
Our Score
The best shoe for male cashiers is the Skechers Flex Advantage Bendon. This lightweight, comfortable shoe came recommended by more than a third of the retail workers we spoke to. Overall, if you are on your feet the entire day, you need some ultra comfortable and durable shoes. The Skechers Men’s Flex Advantage Bendon Work Shoe delivers everything you need and more.
The full-length insole features memory foam padding. It delivers excellent cushioning and is fully removable. The FlexSole midsole is ultra-lightweight and flexible. It produces responsive impact protection and support to keep your comfortable and injury-free at work. The slip-resistant outsole features fine siping to maximise grip in all conditions. It also has flex grooves running along it. These allow your feet to bend and flex naturally, reducing the risk of injury due to constriction.
The mesh upper is lightweight and flexible. It moves with your feet to ensure they work through their natural range of motion. It’s also entirely waterproof, which is rare in mesh shoes. And it’s made from a single piece of mesh fabric. This means there are no seams within the shoes, reducing rubbing and the risk of blisters. The tongue and ankle collar are lightly padded for comfort and support. They grip your ankle and ensure your foot is stable inside the shoe.
Cons
The memory foam padding on the insole is thinner than we’d like. If you need flat foot support or extra cushioning, they won’t do. Thankfully, the insole fully removable so can be replaced with aftermarket insoles if required.
Pros
- Outsole with flex grooves provide flexibility
- FlexSole midsole is lightweight and provides impact protection
- Mesh upper is seamless and waterproof
- Inexpensive
Cons
- Memory foam isn’t as supportive as we’d like

The midsole offers exceptional shock absorption while still being flexible. It protects you from the impact of walking on hard floors while allowing your feet to move naturally.
As part of Skechers’ Relaxed Fit range, these plenty of wiggle room for your toes. They don’t feel constricting in the midfoot or heel either. They’re available in both regular and wide sizes if you need even more space. The upper is breathable and lightweight. Due to how lightweight it is, we believe that this shoe is also perfect for pharmacists or nurses.
It’s made of a single piece of mesh. This means there are no seams to rub against your feet, reducing the risk of blisters. It’s treated with Scotchguard protection for waterproofing and stain resistance.

Best Shoes for Cashiers Working on Concrete All Day (Men & Women)
97/100
Our Score
The best athletic shoe for working a cashier job on concrete is the Cloudfoam. It’s flexible, lightweight and offers all-day comfort straight out of the box. The outsole and midsole are built using Cloudfoam technology. It’s a lightweight foam that’s cushioned, responsive and absorbs the impact of your footfalls – protecting you from foot fatigue or injury. The insole brings even more padding to the party. It features a thin layer of memory foam for ultimate comfort. The shoe has a slight heel drop – but the elevated toe box makes up for that. Despite being a running shoe, the Cloudfoams are good for standing and walking all day.
The mesh knit upper allows air to flow freely around your feet. It’s tight, without being constricting. One of our testers described the shoes as “feeling like you’re wearing comfy socks with nice soles.” The ankle collar and tongue are both well padded. They ensure the shoes are secure and comfortable on your feet. There’s also an external heel counter for maximum stability.
You’ll also notice that the outsole features small cutouts. These are for weight saving and to show off the jazzy yellow Cloudfoam beneath. The sole is also textured to improve traction.
Cons
Let’s be frank, the shoes are not formal enough for many stores. Still… if your store manager lets you wear these shoes, you’d be hard-pressed to find anything more comfortable.
It’s also worth noting that the soles are not actually rated non-slip. They provide good traction but might not be suitable for very slippery environments.
Pros
- Lightweight foam cushions and absorbs impact
- Memory foam insole adds extra padding
- Breathable mesh upper
- External ankle counter provides maximum stability
Cons
- Not formal
- Not rated non-slip

97/100
Our Score
The comfiest shoe for male cashiers is the Clarks Cotrell Step loafer. This formal looking shoe offers top-level support and all-day comfort straight out of the box. The EVA sole is lightweight and flexible. It features grooves that allow it to bend and move with your foot. These mean you retain sensory feedback and aren’t restricted in your movements. Cons
These shoes aren’t rated as non-slip. The EVA sole produces a good level of traction but not enough to meet official standards. EVA is also less durable than a traditional rubber sole. It wears down much faster on abrasive surfaces like asphalt or concrete.
Pros
- Lightweight EVA sole moves with your foot
- Ortholite memory foam maximizes comfort and arch support
- Formal style
- Available in regular and wide versions
Cons
- EVA sole may wear down quickly on abrasive surfaces like concrete

It’s anatomically cushioned to match the shape of your feet and features a gel cushion to absorb impacts. It’s also anti-compression. Even after a long shift, it still produces high-level comfort. It has a relatively deep heel cup that keeps the foot stable inside the shoe; rare for loafers.
The tumbled leather upper gives these shoes their formal appearance. It’s classy, spill-proof and easy to clean – everything you could want from a formal work shoe. The Dri-Lex interior lining is soft and wicks moisture away from your feet. It’s treated with Aegis Microbe Shield to kill off any odour causing bacteria found in sweat.
Cons
If you walk a lot – we’re talking miles per day – this may not be the right shoe. While it does have a bouncy, athletic midsole, retail sales workers say it’s not as durable as other shoes. It’s best for sitting, standing and walking up to 5 miles per day.
Pros
- Memory foam insole absorbs impact
- Dri-Lex lining is moisture-wicking
- Aegis Microbe Shield controls odor-causing bacteria
- Leather upper is formal and durable

Best Clogs for Cashiers (Men)
Dansko Men's XP 2.0
Why this product?
This shoe is as comfortable as a Croc, but with added support and stability. The non-slip rubber sole offers traction on every surface, and the rocker design promotes a natural gait.
98/100
Our Score
The best clogs for male cashiers are the Dansko XP 2.0. They’re popular with cashiers because they’re breathable, comfy and easy to slip on and off. They’re well suited to shifts on your feet or sitting at a register. Comfort-wise, the’re comparable to Crocs – but more supportive. They’re some of the more comfortable shoes we’ve tested.
The leather upper has a smart look and feel to it. It’s waterproof, keeping you safe from spills while being easy to clean. It’s super durable thanks to Dansko’s patented staple construction. The ankle collar is well padded. It features extra cushioning around the instep for enhanced comfort and support. The large toe box offers plenty of wiggle room. It allows your toes to stretch and spread naturally as you walk. When allowed to move like this, they act as a natural suspension system, reducing the impact on your ankles, knees and hips.
The non-slip rubber sole protects you from slippery surfaces – wet or dry. It’s formed to create an anti-fatigue rocker design. This gentle shape encourages a more efficient gait to ensure you have energy left at the end of a shift. Next is the EVA midsole. Its extreme low weight and thick cushioning provides increased stability and support. It reduces foot fatigue, heel pain and joint issues. The removable PU footbed includes a plastic arch stabiliser for exceptional arch support. The rest of the insole is made of memory foam for cushioning.
The high specification walking technology in these shoes ensures they’re comfortable, protective and offer exceptional support. Even across a 12-hour shift.
Cons
There is a long break in period with these Danskos. They’re not uncomfortable straight out of the box but require a month of wear before they reach their peak. Once they do break in, they’re better than Crocs – and a lot more supportive and functional.
We wish there was a smaller heel drop on this shoe. It is offset by the elevated toe box and the heel does compress some, but still. This is more standing than walking shoe.
Pros
- Non-slip rubber sole offers grip on every surface
- EVA Midsole reduces foot fatigue and heel pain
- Footbed contains plastic arch stabilizer for exceptional arch support
- Leather upper is waterproof and durable
Cons
- Take a long time to break in

The leather upper has a smart appearance and is easy to clean. It’s waterproof too, protecting your feet from spills or drips. The roomy toe box provides loads of wiggle room for your feet to move naturally. It’s also reinforced to offer slight protection against light objects. Don’t get it confused with a safety toe though, it won’t protect you from everything.
The collar features extra padding around the instep for increased comfort and support. It works in conjunction with the PU internal frame. Together they prevent your foot from turning or rolling as you walk. They encourage better walking posture, protecting your entire body from the long term impact of walking.
The PU outsole also promotes a better walking posture with its rocker design. It allows you to easily roll one step into another for a more efficient gait – leaving you with energy left at the end of a shift. The heel strike zone of the sole is extra wide for increased stability.
The footbed provides excellent arch support and cushioning. It’s also breathable, allowing air to flow around your feet from beneath.

Best Sports Shoe for Cashiers (Men)
Onitsuka Tiger Men's Mexico 66 Fashion Sneaker
Why this product?
This shoe has a reputation for good durability and comfort. Spill-proof and easy to clean, the upper offers plenty of flexibility. Plus, the lightweight insole keeps your feet dry and cool.
99/100
Our Score
The best lightweight shoe for men is the Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66. Designed as a lightweight sport shoe and manufactured by sports shoe giant ASICS, this good looking shoe has a reputation for durability and comfort.
It’s available in a range of colours and designs. Be careful which you choose, some models have a leather upper, others are Goretex. There are also some models available in a knit design but these are a bit too ‘loud’ for an average retail worker.
Whether you opt for a leather model or pick the Goretex version, the shoes are spillproof. They’re also easy to clean and lorded for their durability. There’s plenty of flex in the upper too, so they’re not constricting.
The heel collar is lightly padded for comfort. It’s low cut, allowing plenty of ankle movement, which will build up strength and reduce your long term risk of injury.
Inside, they feature a lightweight Ortholite X40 insole. It’s moisture-wicking, pulling sweat away from your feet. But it’s also breathable. Allowing air to flow in from beneath, to keep you cool as you walk.
The next layer is the Amplifoam midsole. It allows all 33 joints in your feet to work as nature intended – giving you some of the most responsive cushioning we’ve ever seen. It’s a lower density than EVA, making it a lighter option. It’s also compression resistant, so won’t wear down over time.
Finally, the rubber outsole excels at providing consistent traction. It’s built for handling slick conditions such as wet rocks. This means it performs well on retail store floors.
Cons
As lightweight sport sneakers, these shoes cannot be expected to have the same level of tech as some of the heavier, more supportive shoes we’ve discussed. It’s a trade off.
There’s not a lot of ankle support. The low ankle cut offers a ton of movement but very little support. If you already have weak ankles or require more support, these are not the shoes for you. There’s also less arch support than in a lot of the other shoes we’ve mentioned.
Finally, although they produce a lot of traction, the soles are not officially rated as anti-slip.
Pros
- Upper is waterproof and easy to clean
- Available in a variety of colors and designs
- Lightweight Ortholite X40 insole is moisture-wicking and breathable
- Amplifoam midsole offers responsive cushioning
- Rubber outsole provides consistent traction
Cons
- No ankle support
- Less arch support than similar models
- Not rated non-slip
Best Sports Shoe for Cashiers (Women)
Skechers Women's Go Walk 5-15901 Sneaker
Why this product?
This shoe features a dual-density outsole that offers maximum support and stability. The breathable mesh upper keeps your foot cool, while the insole offers high-rebound cushioning.
98/100
Our Score
The best lightweight shoe for women is the Skechers Go Walk 5. Chosen for its ultralight construction and excellent build quality, this walking shoe exceeded our expectations.
The air mesh upper is super breathable. It keeps your feet cool and comfortable, even on hot summer days. On the heel is Skechers’ Quick Fit Portal. It makes sliding the shoes on and off an easy task. There’s also thick cushioning around the collar and heel to prevent rubbing and keep your feet snug in the shoes.
Inside, the Goga Matt Insole offers high rebound cushioning. It returns a small amount of energy with each step, reducing foot fatigue during your shift. It’s breathable too, working with the upper to keep you sweat-free.
An Ultra Go Outsole makes up the rest of the sole. It’s dual-density for maximum support and stability. It features Pillar Comfort Technology for responsive comfort. As you walk, the sole flexes with your foot for a more efficient heel-toe transition.
Cons
Over time, the mesh knit upper on these Skechers can stretch and become less supportive. While the shoes don’t lose any of their comfort when this occurs, they are less secure and not as aesthetically pleasing.
The upper is also not waterproof. Even a small amount of liquid can soak through. If you require spillproof shoes, these are not the shoes for you.
Pros
- Breathable mesh upper keeps feet cool
- Ultra Go Outsole is dual-density for maximum support and stability
- Goga Matt insole reduces foot fatigue
Cons
- Mesh knit upper can get stretched out over time
- Not waterproof
Buying Guide
Arch Support
As a cashier, you’ll sometimes find yourself standing in one spot or walking around the store for hours at a time. This can cause your feet to tire out fast. To start with, having tired aching feet is sore and unpleasant but in the long term, it can cause real issues.
Flat feet, collapsed arches and even injuries like plantar fasciitis are all common in retail workers. Remember, prevention is better than cure. It’s better to stop these issues before they become a problem.
Look out for shoes with well-rated arch support. This will help correct poor foot posture, allow you to walk more naturally and reduce the risk of serious injury. Most shoes will include a good level of arch support. But if that’s not enough, you can purchase supportive insoles to add to any shoe.
Cushioning
If you’re on your feet all day, good cushioning is another way to prevent injury and foot fatigue. Having shoes with a well-cushioned sole will keep you comfortable and sprightly on your feet, even after a long shift. A padded ankle collar and tongue will reduce rubbing and help stop your feet from sliding inside the shoes.
You’ll notice how much more energy you have at the end of a long day with comfortable shoes on.
Be aware though, too much cushioning can be as bad for you as too little. If your shoes have too much cushioning you’ll lose sensory feedback from the ground. This will cause you to walk in a heavy-footed manner, which can do long term harm to your legs, joints and back.
Breathability
Having comfortable shoes that leave your feet sweaty and gross is a pointless waste of time. If you’re on your feet for hours at a time, you want shoes that will keep your feet cool. Shoes made from breathable materials like leather or mesh are a solid choice. They allow air to flow around your feet, preventing a build up of sweat.
If your shoes are not made of breathable materials, they should include mesh panels or perforations to promote airflow. Some shoes will include proprietary technology around the sole or upper to increase breathability.
Slip Resistance
You’ll often find polished or sealed concrete floors while working a retail job. Not only are these surfaces extra hard on your feet, but they can also get extremely slippery. Especially when wet. To ensure your safety at work, slip-resistant shoes are a must. It’s good practice to wear non-slip shoes even if they’re not mandatory in your shop.
A Flat Sole
There’s a school of thought that says running shoes are good for cashiers and retail workers. However, this has been proven wrong by podiatrists. Running shoes have an elevated heel which is beneficial for runners. It’s well-cushioned and often delivers a good energy return.
However, standing in shoes with a raised heel all day has a detrimental effect on your posture. In the long term, this can lead to severe back issues. Walking all day in elevated heels is also a problem. They throw off your natural gate which can lead to ankle, knee and hip pain.
To ensure you’re safe and comfortable at work, opt for shoes with a flat sole.
Lightweight
If you’re wearing your shoes all day, it goes without saying that you don’t want them to weigh a ton. Ensure your shoes of choice are lightweight as well as supportive and comfortable.
EVA foam used in the footbed or mesh materials for the upper will keep your shoes as light as possible.
In Closing...
The best shoes for cashiers we tested are the Skechers Flex Advantage for men and the Skechers Ghenter Bronaugh for women.
They’re comfortable and lightweight. They reduce foot fatigue and protect your feet against standing for extended periods. They also have a professional look and are well priced.
